WHAT: Join researchers for informal conversations about current articles, chapters, and books related to DLBE. Relevant articles will be shared prior to each meeting to allow for robust conversation.

WHEN: Three Virtual Meetings

Wednesday, October 7 at 4:30pm

  • ARTICLE: La Gran Historia de Dilly Meets the Science of Reading: A Cuento of Scripts, Skills, and Silenced Selves (2026)
  • FACILITATORS: Elenita Irizarry Ramos & Ysaaca Axelrod
  • SUMMARY: Do you have questions about what High-Quality Instructional Materials look like in DLBE? Have you noticed that translated materials and district-wide curriculum do not always meet your needs as a DLBE teacher? The first "Book" Club article is a recent study of a top-rated English-Spanish literacy curriculum based in the Science of Reading and its implications for teaching in languages other than English. Join us to ask the authors questions about how their findings can help you improve your curriculum implementation.

Tuesday, December 8 at 4pm

  • ARTICLE: Is Equitable Integrated Schooling Possible?: Envisioning a Politics of Care in Two-Way Bilingual Education (2026)
  • FACILITATOR: Laura Hamman-Ortiz
  • SUMMARY: What does it really take to build an equitable dual language program? Join us for an opportunity to dig deeply into this question as we read and discuss a case study of a two-way bilingual school working intentionally toward equity. Together, we’ll explore five dimensions of a “politics of care” – relational, intersectional, material, political, and dynamic – and consider how they can inform the ways we design programs, build relationships, and navigate tensions in dual language communities. Come ready to read, reflect, and wrestle with what equitable dual language education can – and should – look like.

Tuesday, January 12 at 4pm
